The Hidden System Inside Your Deck
Most people learn tarot card by card. They memorize what The Fool means, then The Magician, then slowly work through all 78 cards. It works, but it is slow.
There is a faster way: learn the numbers.
Every numbered card in the Minor Arcana shares its meaning with every other card of the same number. The Twos all share a theme. The Fives all share a theme. Once you understand the number, you understand four cards at once, and the suit tells you the specific flavor.
This is numerology applied to tarot, and it will cut your learning time in half.
- Each Minor Arcana number carries a shared theme across all four suits. 1 (Beginning), 2 (Choice), 3 (Growth), 4 (Foundation), 5 (Conflict), 6 (Harmony), 7 (Reflection), 8 (Movement), 9 (Near completion), and 10 (Completion).
- Learning the ten number meanings provides a framework for 40 of the 78 cards. Combining the number's theme with the suit's flavor (Cups for emotions, Wands for passion, Swords for mind, Pentacles for material) allows reading any numbered Minor Arcana card.
- Fives universally introduce disruption and necessary friction. Five of Cups brings grief, Five of Wands brings conflict, Five of Swords brings hollow victory, and Five of Pentacles brings hardship and isolation.
- Tens represent completion that contains a new beginning. Ten of Cups signals emotional fulfillment, Ten of Wands signals burdensome overload, Ten of Swords signals rock bottom, and Ten of Pentacles signals legacy and long-term wealth.
- Multiple cards of the same number amplify that number's theme. Multiple Aces signal a major new beginning across life areas, multiple Fives signal significant disruption, and multiple Tens signal simultaneous endings and transitions.
The Meaning of Each Number

Aces (1): Beginnings
Aces are seeds. Pure potential. The very first spark of their suit’s energy. They represent new opportunities, fresh starts, and raw possibility.
- Ace of Cups — A new emotional beginning. New love, new creativity, new intuition.
- Ace of Wands — A new spark of inspiration. A creative or career opportunity.
- Ace of Swords — A breakthrough idea. Mental clarity arriving suddenly.
- Ace of Pentacles — A new financial or material opportunity.
When you see an Ace: Something is starting. Say yes.
Twos: Balance and Choice
Twos represent duality, partnership, and decisions. Two forces in tension or harmony. The first challenge after the Ace’s pure beginning.
- Two of Cups — Partnership, mutual attraction, unified connection.
- Two of Wands — Planning, looking ahead, choosing a direction.
- Two of Swords — Indecision, stalemate, avoiding a difficult choice.
- Two of Pentacles — Balancing priorities, juggling responsibilities.
When you see a Two: A choice is present. Something needs balancing.
Threes: Growth and Expression
Threes represent the first fruit of creation. The initial growth after the seed (Ace) and the choice (Two). Expression, collaboration, and early results.
- Three of Cups — Celebration, friendship, community joy.
- Three of Wands — Expansion, looking toward the horizon, early progress.
- Three of Swords — Heartbreak, emotional pain, a painful truth emerging.
- Three of Pentacles — Teamwork, collaboration, skill development.
When you see a Three: Something is growing. Express it or face it.
Fours: Structure and Stability
Fours represent foundations, stability, and sometimes stagnation. The energy settles into form. This can feel safe or suffocating depending on the suit.
- Four of Cups — Contemplation, apathy, missing an opportunity because of withdrawal.
- Four of Wands — Celebration, homecoming, stable foundation worth celebrating.
- Four of Swords — Rest, recovery, necessary pause.
- Four of Pentacles — Security, control, holding on too tightly.
When you see a Four: A foundation exists. Is it supporting you or confining you?

Fives: Conflict and Change
Fives are the disruptors. Every Five introduces tension, challenge, or loss. They are uncomfortable but necessary. Growth requires friction.
- Five of Cups — Loss, grief, focusing on what is gone.
- Five of Wands — Conflict, competition, disagreement.
- Five of Swords — Defeat, winning at a cost, hollow victory.
- Five of Pentacles — Financial hardship, isolation, feeling left out in the cold.
When you see a Five: Something is being disrupted. The discomfort is the lesson.
Sixes: Harmony and Resolution
After the Five’s conflict, Sixes restore balance. They represent healing, generosity, and finding your way back to center.
- Six of Cups — Nostalgia, innocence, reunion with the past.
- Six of Wands — Victory, recognition, public success.
- Six of Swords — Transition, moving on, leaving troubled waters.
- Six of Pentacles — Generosity, giving and receiving, balance of resources.
When you see a Six: Healing is happening. Harmony is returning.
Sevens: Reflection and Inner Work
Sevens turn inward. They represent assessment, strategy, and the deeper questions that arise after the Six’s resolution. What do you really want? What is true?
- Seven of Cups — Fantasy, too many choices, wishful thinking.
- Seven of Wands — Defending your position, standing your ground.
- Seven of Swords — Strategy, deception, going it alone.
- Seven of Pentacles — Patience, long-term investment, waiting for results.
When you see a Seven: Look deeper. The surface is not the full story.
Eights: Mastery and Movement
Eights represent power, momentum, and the results of sustained effort. Things are moving fast. The question is whether you are in control of the movement.
- Eight of Cups — Walking away from what no longer serves you.
- Eight of Wands — Rapid progress, swift movement, messages arriving.
- Eight of Swords — Feeling trapped by your own thoughts. Restrictions that are self-imposed.
- Eight of Pentacles — Mastery through repetition. Dedication to craft.
When you see an Eight: Momentum is present. Are you directing it or being carried by it?
Nines: Near Completion
Nines are almost there. They represent the culmination before the final resolution. The last push, the final test, the moment before the finish line.
- Nine of Cups — Contentment, wish fulfillment, satisfaction.
- Nine of Wands — Resilience, last stand, perseverance through exhaustion.
- Nine of Swords — Anxiety, nightmares, the darkest hour before dawn.
- Nine of Pentacles — Self-sufficiency, luxury, financial independence.
When you see a Nine: You are almost there. Do not stop now.

Tens: Completion and Transition
Tens are endings that contain beginnings. The cycle completes. The energy of the suit reaches its fullest expression, for better or worse.
- Ten of Cups — Emotional fulfillment, happiness, family harmony.
- Ten of Wands — Burden, overload, carrying too much to the finish line.
- Ten of Swords — Rock bottom, painful ending, the worst is over.
- Ten of Pentacles — Legacy, wealth, long-term success and security.
When you see a Ten: A cycle is ending. What comes next begins soon.
Using Number Patterns in Readings
When multiple cards of the same number appear in a spread, the number’s theme is amplified:
- Multiple Aces — A major new beginning across several areas of life
- Multiple Fives — A period of significant disruption and change
- Multiple Tens — Major endings and transitions happening simultaneously
Pay attention to these clusters. They tell you what phase of the cycle you are in.
The Shortcut
Here is the cheat sheet. Memorize this list, and you immediately have a framework for 40 of the 78 cards:
1 = Beginning. 2 = Choice. 3 = Growth. 4 = Foundation. 5 = Conflict. 6 = Harmony. 7 = Reflection. 8 = Movement. 9 = Near completion. 10 = Completion.
Add the suit flavor (Cups = emotions, Wands = passion, Swords = mind, Pentacles = material), and you can read any numbered Minor Arcana card, even if you have never seen it before.
The Cards Know tracks every card you draw and helps you notice these numeric patterns over time. Your readings become richer as you see the cycles playing out in your own life.
